Text Box: Tobacco Consumption = Prolonged Pain Symptoms + Failed Pain Treatments

Our pain center has enough clinical evidenced based on more than 1200 patients treated to emphatically state that tobacco consumers in whatever form: smoking or chewing will not obtain pain relief in the long term.

The following data illustrates quantitative effects of cigarette smoking on our treatments in adult men:

Smoking half pack per day (10 cigarettes) = Pain Relief sustained only for 6 weeks or less after treatments.
Smoking One pack per day (20 cigarettes) = Pain Relief sustained only for 3 weeks or less after treatments.
Smoking more than a pack per day (over 20 cigarettes) = Pain Relief no more than 3 days. Pain procedure itself can provoke more pain.
Ultra Heavy Smoking 2 packs or more (40 cigarettes are more) = Forget getting pain treatments, major organ and organ systems are at stake. Heart attack, Stroke, Chronic Renal failure, Lung damage etc., are just around the corner if not already happening!

Women who smoke have worse treatment outcomes than men who smoke the same amount.

Secondary Tobacco Smoke Inhalation

Unfortunately these patients fail our pain treatments as well. Generally they are in an environment where either their spouse or those who live with them are heavy smokers. Potentially the non smokers who inhale exhaled tobacco smoke have the same medical problems from smoking and consequently fail our pain treatments. Approximately the effects of half a pack or more from a person smoking a full pack per day can be sustained by those constantly being around the smoker!

Why does our pain treatments fail in smokers?

Our pain treatments are specifically done to improve blood circulation in the pain producing areas. In particular improvement in micro-vascular blood flow occurs in the areas that cause pain symptoms. Following our pain treatments healing and repair take place for many months to come even after the injected medications wear off (usually in 3 weeks time). Improvement in blood circulation is sustained in non smokers and those who quit before commencing treatments. In smokers this effect is either absent or short lived resulting in the return of pain symptoms.

BOTTOM LINE: SMOKING MAKES PAIN SYMPTOMS PERSISTENT. HEAVY SMOKERS UNWILLING TO QUIT SMOKING SHALL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR OUR TREATMENTS.
